Tunguska Explosion of Russia: Mystery Remains Even After a Century

There was a large explosion near Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia on June 30, 1908. This explosion flattened 500,000 acres of Siberian forest. The scientists calculated that the explosion was 10 megatons to 20 megatons of TNT in strength, which is 1,000 times more powerful than atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The area covered by the blasts was nearly the size of Tokyo. Over a century has passed for this incident yet the true cause of Tungska explosion has not been found. Though most researchers believe that the explosion was caused by something that crashed from the skies, others feel it was due to eruptions in the ground. Some modern day researchers are also citing UFO caused this massive explosion.

Fallen Trees as aftermath of Tunguska Explosion

From the Skies

Cosmic impact from a comet or asteroid has been thought to be the common cause of this explosion. In the last decade scientists have concluded that the Tunguska explosion was caused by an asteroid that exploded in the Earth’s atmosphere. This asteroid measured approximately 100 feet in width and 617,300 tons in weight. After the asteroid exploded within Earth’s atmosphere it would have generated supersonic jet with the superheated gases. The asteroid was broken into a smaller mass of 65 feet. The locals claim that the forest was quite unhealthy back then and would not take such a large amount of energy to blow the trees down. Moreover, the winds caused by the blast would have made the explosion look more powerful than it actually was. So the real magnitude of the explosion might be 3 to 5 megatons. Many researchers feel that it was a stony, carbonaceous comet that caused this explosion. But the problem with this is more asteroids pass by Earth every day then comets.

Many Feel the Explosion was Caused by an Asteroid Crashing in Earth's Atmosphere

From Below the Ground

Many researchers believe that the reasons of Tunguska explosion lie beneath the ground and not overhead. Such groups feel that eruption of a natural gas known as kimberlite (a volcanic rock known for holding diamonds) was the real cause. Fluid stored 3,000 kilometres deep became a gas when it reached the surface and expanded in volume significantly causing the blast. The chemical anomalies and pattern of fallen trees have been cited as examples by this group of scientists.

Some believe that Explosion was caused by Molten Gases below the Earth's Surface

Other Theories

  • UFO crash: Some Russian scientists have claimed that UFO crash or explosion of nuclear reactor in the alien spaceships as a cause for such explosion. But their claims have not been substantiated by any evidence.
  • Antimatter: As there is no debris left in Tunguska thus some experts are citing the annihilation of antimatter as the cause.
  • Some People deem Nikola Tesla Death Ray was responsible for the explosion

  • Nikola Tesla: Tesla was a pioneer of modern radio and current electricity. He was known as the mad scientist. According to a story he had developed a new equipment known as Death Ray and tested it in Tunguska. But when the world came to know about the event he dismantled the weapon.

It seems that with every passing day the asteroid theory behind the cause of the Tunguska explosion is becoming popular.
